The BCD996P2 base/mobile scanner builds on the solid technical prowess of the BCD996XT by adding APCO Project 25 Phase II support and a USB front port for updates and programming.

Looks like it might be a nice scanner. It’s a little cheaper price wise than mine.
will the remote head work with this?
I have no idea. Remote head? What remote head? I have no clue on this scanner.
Really? No idea? Since the 996P2 is clearly an update of the 996XT, there is a remote head for the 996XT that SHOULD work for the new radio.

Wow learn something new everyday
best place to ask about that would be radioreference.com.
I hope I didn’t come across as rude with my “Really? No idea?” comment, but it struck me as odd that someone who knew about the 996XT wouldn’t know of the control head. Long since out of production, there still some available through Scannermaster and on eBay, from time to time. Only downside is that the geniuses at Uniden didn’t feel the need to include a power on/off switch on the control head unit.
No offense taken at all.
Ha! Why am I not surprised?
The model of the remote control head is a Uniden RH 96, and unfortunately it will not work with any of the P2 or HP models. Only works with with the XT models because of the new front input interface of the BCD996P2 is a micro USB , which is different from the XT models. As of right now I do not know of any remote control heads that are compatible with the P 2 or HP models of a 996. If anybody has any updated information please email me at firemedic78@msn.com. That is the only issue that makes it not compatible. If you look at the front of the XT models where you would put your programming cable, it is not the same input as the P2 or HP models. The front input to the P2 and HP models are a micro USB, like you would use for a GPS unit. There is, I believe, the DB9 pin port on the back of the unit but I don’t know if that will work with the RH 96. Again if anybody knows different and if there is a remote control head model out there for the P2 and HP models, please email me because I would like to buy one. Thank you.
Only way to do it is to hardwire the control head unit to the batter, unless you don’t mind bothering with 12VDC plugs. I can’t imagine going into the trunk to turn on and off the main radio every time. But in today’s modern cars with limited radio space, the control head unit is a nice feature to have. Originally, it was priced the same as the 996 scanner itself. For the last few years, the price is reasonable. It can be had on sale now and then for under $140. Availability is questionable, as I had stated it’s no longer being produced. So whatever is stock on hand is what there is. And, there is eBay.
