In case anyone’s wondering it’s the MFJ – 492 memory keyer. I picked up the X version with the chip in there for the extra memories. So far so good. I really had to read the manual on it… so I can figure out just what the heck I’m doing. But otherwise it works very well.
I’ve yet to hold a CW qso with it. Programming the thing is easy; my code sending not so much. It only does what you tell it to do and if you put in the wrong character, it repeats what you put in. so, you got to get it right the first time. talk about tough! Oy!
Anyhow back to playing with my toy.
Update: For those who care, I picked it up from R & L electronics down in Hamilton, Ohio. I picked the 492X, cabling for the radio, and the wall adapter. I paid $181.36 total. Unit works fine, except for one thing; the backup battery is dead. I can turn it on and program it. But, if I turn it off; it looses its memories and goes back to default. I also have the remote for the unit on backorder at R & L. Anyhow, I will call R & L on monday and see if they have the replacement back battery for it. From what I understand; this is a common thing with these units. It is really not that big of a deal, as if you are contesting, you are not going to be turning the unit off. But, there are things to consider; power failures, generators running out of gas and so forth. So, monday, I will call MFJ and hopefully, get a replacement battery.
